Only 9 holes were played at the 2008 AT&T Classic yesterday as the heavens opened on the TPC Sugarloaf course in Altalnta, slowing play to a snail’s place and forcing some players off the greens.
Players battled in driving rain and soggy conditions to assert dominance in a weakened field. By the end of the day Kenny Perry was one of five players to emerge at the head of the field, scoring a six under 66. “I hit some good shots and made some nice saves coming in,” Perry said after his round. “The last few holes were brutal.”
Perry’s good performance on the first day of the 2008 AT&T Classic comes in the wake of a meltdown at the 2008 Players Championship which saw him plunge from 2nd to 15th place during the final round of that tournament.
Perry shares his first round lead at the 2008 AT&T Classic with Jonathan Byrd, Jonathan Kaye, Parker McLachlin and Ryan Palmer. Course designer Greg Norman also put in an appearance during the first round of the 2006 AT&T Classic, but seemed unable to come to terms with the course he created, carding a round of 80.
