The history of this event can be somewhat confusing due to the various names by which it has been known. The tournament has been known since its 2007 edition as the AT&T Classic, but it was founded in 1967 as the Atlanta Classic, and previous events dating to 1934 are included in the PGA Tour’s past winners list.

In 1964, Atlanta businessman Jim Clay, along with six of his friends, bought hundreds of acres of farmland near the Chattahoochee River in Cobb County.

The Atlanta Country Club (ACC) was built on the land, which soon became the annual site of the Atlanta Golf Classic tournament. The Atlanta Classic Foundation, established by Clay and 50 of his friends, has managed and promoted the tournament since its debut in 1966. That year, Clay held a two-day Pro-Am at ACC to convince PGA Tour officials that the foundation could manage such a tournament.

Bob Charles made AT&T Classic history by winning the inaugural 1967 Atlanta Classic championship. Since then, the tournament has been variously known as the Georgia-Pacific Atlanta Golf Classic, the BellSouth Atlanta Golf Classic and the BellSouth Classic.

From 1967 until 1996 the Classic was played at Atlanta Country Club in Marietta, Georgia, northwest of Atlanta. Since 1997, it has been played over the Stables and Meadows Courses at the TPC at Sugarloaf in Duluth, Georgia, which is a north-eastern suburb on the outskirts of Atlanta.

In 2007, the AT&T Classic was held over the third weekend in May, one week after the Players Championship and the event will continue in this slot in the US PGA Tour schedule..

Which golfers will make AT&T Classic history at the 2008 golf tournament?
